The Grand Lodge of Japan is located in the Tokyo Masonic Center, just a stone's throw from Tokyo Tower.
The Tokyo Masonic Center is owned by the Japan Mason Foundation (formerly the Tokyo Masonic Association, TMA), and houses not only the Grand Lodge of Japan but also several other related organizations.
The location of the center was owned by the Hisamatsu family (Tokugawa Shogun Family) until the Edo period.
After the Meiji Ishin Revolution, the Hisamatsu property was purchased by Suikosha, a social organization of the Imperial Navy.
After World War II, the Suikosha building was put up for sale by the Japanese government, and the Scottish Rite and Tokyo Masonic Lodge No. 2 raised funds to purchase it. They used their funds to create a public interest corporation to support Freemasonry in Japan. This is the Tokyo Masonic Association (TMA, now the Masonic Foundation of Japan, MFJ).
When the structure began to deteriorate and maintenance costs became too high, TMA approached two large companies, Shimizu Corporation and Mori Real Estate (now Mori Building), to plan a facility upgrade. In 1981, TMC was rebuilt with the addition of two new office buildings that generate revenue.
And now, TMC is in the process of rebuilding.
We will be sharing photos of our building's reconstruction on this webpage.
