I would like to start by asking you all a question.
Have you heard the name "Carlos Rodriguez Jimenes" ?
Not the Columbian football player nor the Mexican restaurant owner.
Jimenes was the one who served as the very first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Japan.
Working as a diplomat for Venezuela, he returned to Japan after World War II and was elected to serve as Grand Master upon the formation of the Grand Lodge of Japan.
Most of the members at the time were either from the United States or the Philippines, so the fact that a Venezuelan was elected as Grand Master symbolizes the "diversity and harmony" that brings us together, transcending nationality and religious beliefs.
When the Grand Lodge of Japan was formed in 1957, it was also a turning point in Japanese society in Japan, a period of transition from post-war reconstruction to a time of rapid economic growth.
I can easily imagine how difficult it must have been to form and maintain a Grand Lodge in a foreign land, without the advanced technologies like the internet or mobile phones.
After the Grand Lodge of Japan’s formation, the Grand Lodge of South Carolina, with which General Douglas MacArthur was affiliated, was the first to recognize the Grand Lodge of Japan.
He may have believed that the spirit of Freemasonry was necessary for Japan’s recovery after the devastation of war.
Since then, the mutual recognition between the Grand Lodge of Japan and other Grand Lodges is now worldwide, spanning 204 countries and territories in total.
I would like to take this opportunity to think together what our predecessors entrusted to us, by looking back on the history of Masonry in Japan.
There are currently 18 constituent lodges under the Grand Lodge of Japan, with approximately 1400 members.
While this is a valuable achievement for the 70-year history of the Craft in Japan, I would say
it is still small compared to Masonry in other countries.
In the age of advanced technologies like social media and AI, it is getting much easier for people outside of Freemasonry to get the accurate information about the Fraternity and the external factors preventing Freemasonry from spreading in Japan are diminishing.
However, what about the people inside Freemasonry ?
If there is anyone who thinks that "we Freemasons are special," I would like to gently admonish his misunderstanding.
We Freemasons are not a chosen privileged class, nor are we any better than non-Masonic people.
Perhaps the idea of regarding Freemasonry as something special may have created a wall between us and society outside of the Craft.
While I am aware of the silly urban legends that say Freemasons control the world, that is totally untrue.
Freemasons are a part of society, and we should quietly, yet powerfully, support it.
Let me share a personal anecdote.
Last year, I attended ANCOM of the Grand Lodge of Hawaii. During lunch before the ceremony, a young waiter, seeing me in my tuxedo, asked me.
“Is there an event going on?"
I told him "I am attending ANCOM in Hawaii as a Freemason from Japan".
He then straightened his posture and said, "Oh, you're a Freemason. I have the utmost respect for you."
At that moment, I felt both pride and a profound realization of how deeply and properly
Freemasonry is rooted in Hawaiian society.
It is a proof of one of the achievements of the Hawaiian brothers have made, and it is also a proof that Freemasonry are not just group for getting together or drinking.
This episode made me think about the ideal role of Masonry in society.
I am convinced that only when Freemasonry is properly understood and accepted in society in Japan, can we truly be on the same page as other Grand Lodges all over the world.
I was able to understand the grand design envisioned by our predecessors: the spirit of Freemasonry, contributing to and quietly supporting the development of society in Japan.
That would have been one of the visions our predecessors had for the future of the Grand Lodge of Japan.
Though I am aware of the heavy weight of responsibility as the 70th Grand Master,
I have no anxiety but instead I have positive expectations for my term in the Grand East.
I have wise counsel from my respected past Grand Masters.
I have the support from trustworthy Grand Lodge Officers.
Moreover, I am supported by my beloved Brothers.
Looking back in Japan’s history, during the Edo period shogunate, Japan had adopted a policy of national isolation for over 200 years. Because of the peace and high level of education promoted under the Tokugawa Shogunate, Japan was prepared for the unprecedented speed of modernization during the Meiji era.
Likewise, while The Grand Lodge of Japan may have been regarded as an organization isolated from society in Japan, each lodge has nurtured and produced outstanding individuals, prepared for the advancement of Freemasonry.
I declare that now is the time for the Grand Lodge to make further advancement.
To society in Japan, we will demonstrate the presence of Freemasonry.
To our Brethren across the globe, we will show the presence of the Grand Lodge of Japan.
That is the best way to express our sincere gratitude to our predecessors.
As you know, my term as the Grand Master is just a year.
While a year may not be enough to achieve grand designs, I will do my best to perform my duty as Grand Master, to guide you towards the further advancement of Masonry in Japan.
I would say my duty as Grand Master is almost complete if we share the same vision for the future of this Grand Lodge.
Seeing your reactions, it seems my duty is now completed.
I look forward to fully enjoying the remaining 364 days and 23 hours of my journey as Grand Master, together with all of you.

「カルロス・ロドリゲス・ヒメネス」この名前の人物をご存じでしょうか？
彼はコロンビアのサッカー選手でも、メキシコ料理店のオーナーでもありません。
我が日本グランドロッジの初代グランドマスター、MWBカルロス・ロドリゲス・ヒメネスその人です。
ベネズエラの外交官であった彼は、第二次世界大戦終結後、再び日本の地を踏んだタイミングで日本グランドロッジが設立され、グランドマスターに就任しました。
当時のメンバーの多くはアメリカ人やフィリピン人でしたが、その中でベネズエラ国籍の彼が選ばれたという事実にこそ、人種、国籍、宗教、そして信条を超えて集う我々特有の「多様性とハーモニー」が象徴されていないでしょうか。
日本グランドロッジが設立した1957年（昭和32年）は、日本は戦後復興から高度経済成長期への転換点であり、インターネットも携帯電話もない時代、彼らにとって異国の地である日本において、グランドロッジを設立し、維持することがどれほどの困難であったか、想像に難くありません。
設立後、最初に承認を受けた海外のグランドロッジは、ダグラス・マッカーサー元帥ゆかりのサウスカロライナ・グランドロッジでした。
マッカーサー元帥もまたフリーメイソンのメンバーであり、彼はこの国の復興にはフリーメイソンの精神が必要だと信じていたのかもしれません。
その後、2番目に認証関係を結んだのは、ロドリゲス・ヒメネスの母国ベネズエラグランドロッジであり、それを皮切りに、世界各国へと広がり、現在では204の国と地域のグランドロッジと認証関係を結ぶに至っています。
先人たちが築き上げたこの功績と歴史を振り返ることにより、彼らが我々に何を託したのか、どんな未来を描いたのか、皆さんにも一緒に考えてもらえれば幸いです。
現在、国内には18のロッジが活動しており、会員数は約1400人です。
70年間の歩みとしては価値あるものですが、世界の規模と比較すれば、まだ寂しさを拭えません。
正しい情報が社会に届いていないことにより、日本においてフリーメイソンが普及していないと考えてきましたが、 SNSやAIの普及により、正しい情報を求める人に簡単に届けられる時代となり、フリーメイソンが日本において普及しない外的要因は小さくなりつつあります。
しかし、「内的要因」はどうでしょうか。
もし我々は社会に対して特別な存在であるという慢心を持つ者がいれば、今すぐその考えを捨ててください。
我々は選ばれた特権階級ではなく、非会員に対して優位性があるわけでもありません。そのような独善的な姿勢こそが、社会との間に壁を作ってしまいます。
世間で囁かれるような「世界を裏で操る」といった事実は微塵もありません。 我々は社会の一部であり、静かに、しかし力強く社会を支える存在であるべきです。
昨年、私はハワイ・グランドロッジのANCOMに参加しました。
就任式前にレストランでハンバーガーを食べていたのですが、 タキシードを着て、大きなエプロンケースを持っていた私に、店の給仕の青年が「何かイベントがあるのですか？」と尋ねてきました。
私が「日本のフリーメイソンとしてハワイのANCOMに参加します」と答えると、彼の態度は一変しました。
彼は背筋を正し、「フリーメイソンの方ですか。私は心から尊敬しています」と言葉を掛けてくれたのです。
その瞬間、私は誇らしさ感じるとともに、ハワイの社会にフリーメイソンがどれほど深く、正しく根付いているかを痛感しました。 それは本日お越しのハワイのブラザーたちが積み上げてきた功績の賜物であり、彼らが単に「お酒を飲んで騒いでいるだけの集団」ではないことが証明されました。
このハワイにおける小さなエピソードは、社会におけるメイソンのあるべき姿、すなわち「世界のスタンダード」を私に教えるには十分であり、私は日本社会においてフリーメイソンが正しく理解され、受け入れられた時、初めて我々は世界のグランドロッジと真に肩を並べることができるのだと確信しました。
このような考えに至った時、先人たちが描いたグランドデザインがようやく私の心に届きました。
フリーメイソンの精神を持って、日本社会の発展に貢献し、そして静かに支える。 70年前、彼らはそのような未来の日本グランドロッジを描いたに違いありません。
そう考えると、我々に課された課題は多く、第70代グランドマスターとしての重責が身に染みて参りました。
しかしながら、不安はありません。
なぜならば、私の背後では尊敬する歴代グランドマスターが見守り、私の傍らには信頼できるグランドロッジオフィサーが控え、そして何より、エネルギーに満ちた私の愛するブラザーたちが支えてくれているからに他なりません。
その事実に、その重責は今、もうすでに楽しみに変わりました。
かつてこの国は江戸時代、200年以上の鎖国を経て、その溜まったエネルギーが明治維新へと導きました。
鎖国している時代に培われた成熟した社会と高い教育水準と民度があったからこそ、類を見ない速さで近代化を成し遂げたと言われております。
日本グランドロッジも同様、今日まで社会に対してやや閉ざされた「鎖国」のような状態にありましたが、その内側では各ロッジが成熟し、社会の模範となる素晴らしいブラザーであふれており、今、私は明治維新の時のような時代が変わるエネルギーを感じています。
この団体を通じて、社会に貢献したいという貴方がたの熱い思いが、日本グランドロッジの未来に光明を見出し、この社会に光を放ちます。
それゆえ「日本の夜明けは近い」、「日本のフリーメイソンの夜明けは近い」とそう感じるわけです。
日本社会に、「フリーメイソンここにあり」と、そして世界のブラザーたちに、「日本グランドロッジ、ここにあり」と、そのプレゼンスを示していく。
それこそが我々現役メイソンの使命であり、先人たちへのメッセージであり、恩返しになると信じて疑いません。
私のグランドマスターの任期は1年です。
1年間でなにかを成し遂げられるとは思いませんが、希望に満ちたグランドデザインを示し、夜明けの方向へ導くことこそが、この時代にグランドマスターに選ばれた私の役割であると確信しています。
もし、このスピーチを通じて、皆様と同じ未来を描き、同じ希望を分かち合うことができたならば、私のグランドマスターとしての任務はほぼ完了したといって過言ではありません。
就任後1時間にして任務完了です。
残りの364日と23時間、皆様と共に、グランドマスターとしての旅を存分に楽しみたいと思います。
