The Beginning

In 1853, U.S. Navy Commodore Matthew Perry—himself a Freemason—arrived in Japan and opened the nation to the outside world. Soon after, in 1862, Japan’s first lodge, Sphinx Lodge (under the Grand Lodge of Ireland), was established in Yokohama.

Expansion of Lodges in YokohamaIn

1866, Yokohama Lodge No. 1092 (UGLE) was founded, followed by Otentosama Lodge (UGLE) in 1869, and Star in the East Lodge (SC) in 1879. These lodges served the foreign community in the Yokohama settlement, centered at the Masonic Hall on Yamashita-chō 61.

The Great Kantō Earthquake and Reconstruction

The Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 devastated Yokohama and destroyed the lodges. In 1927, however, a new Yokohama Masonic Temple was completed, and Masonic activity resumed.

War and Renewal

During the Sino-Japanese War and World War II, lodge activities were suspended and property confiscated. After the war, with the support of General Douglas MacArthur—a Freemason—Masonry in Japan was revived in 1946, expanding once again with the participation of Allied occupation forces.

Postwar Growth and Japanese

MembershipUnder the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of the Philippines, new lodges such as Far East Lodge No. 124 were established. In 1950, Japanese citizens were initiated into Masonry for the first time.

The Birth of the Grand Lodge of Japan

With the introduction of Masonic rituals in the Japanese language, the Grand Lodge of Japan was formally established on May 1, 1957, marking a new era of Freemasonry firmly rooted in Japan. Today, the Grand Lodge of Japan consists of 18 lodges with about 1,500 members. Its brethren represent diverse nationalities, languages, religions, and races—united by the timeless Masonic principle of meeting “On the Level.”

はじまり

1853年に来航し日本を開国に導いた米国海軍提督ペリー自身もフリーメイソンでした。彼の来航後まもなく、1862年に日本初のロッジ「スフィンクス・ロッジ」（アイルランドC)が横浜で誕生しました。

横浜のロッジ拡大

1866年に「横浜ロッジNo.1092」（UGLE)、1869年に「オテントサマ・ロッジ」（UGLE)、1879年に「Star in the East ロッジ」（SC)が設立され、横浜居留地の外国人を中心に活動。拠点は山下町61番地の「メソニックホール」に置かれました。

関東大震災と再建

1923年の関東大震災で横浜は壊滅、ロッジも崩壊しましたが、1927年に新たな「横浜メソニックテンプル」が完成し活動が再開されました。

戦争と再出発

日中戦争から第二次世界大戦にかけて活動は停止、建物や備品は没収されました。終戦後、フリーメイソンだったダグラス・マッカーサー元帥の支援もあり、1946年に活動は再開。占領軍関係者とともに再び日本でのメイソンリーが広がりました。

戦後の発展と日本人入会

グランドロッジ・オブ・フィリピン管轄のもと「Far East Lodge No.124」などが設立され、1950年には日本人の入会も始まりました。

日本グランドロッジの誕生

日本語による儀式の導入を経て、1957年5月1日「グランドロッジ・オブ・ジャパン」が設立。これにより、日本の地に根ざしたフリーメイソンリーの新時代が幕を開けました。現在、日本グランドロッジには18のロッジがあり約1500人の会員がいます。会員は様々な国籍、言語、宗教、人種で構成され、会員同士はフリーメイソンの不変の理念であるOn The Levelの精神で固く結ばれています。
