Q. How can I become a Freemason?
A. Freemasonry places great importance on *free will and consent*. This means that no one will invite or solicit you—**you must choose to apply of your own accord**.

The general process is as follows:
1. Learn about Freemasonry.
2. Select a lodge you wish to join and get to know its members.
3. Submit a petition for membership.
If you know a Mason, feel free to ask questions. If not, you may contact the Grand Lodge of Japan, which will be happy to provide guidance and introduce you to a nearby lodge.
Q. Can I choose which lodge to join?
A. Yes. You may petition to join any lodge under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Japan.
Points to consider include:
* The lodge’s location (accessibility)
* The time of stated meetings (daytime or evening)
* The atmosphere and character of its members
Visiting a lodge and meeting its members in person is strongly recommended before you decide.
Q. What is the process for applying?
1. Obtain a petition form from the lodge secretary and complete it.
2. Two Master Masons must sign as your sponsors.
3. After submission, several members will meet with you personally.
4. The lodge will vote by secret ballot; if approved, you will be initiated.
Q. How long does it take to become a Mason?
A. It varies by lodge, but typically a few months. If the lodge is busy or the application is submitted at year-end, it may take longer. Every Mason has gone through this process—there are no shortcuts.
Q. How much are the annual dues?
A. Dues vary by lodge. As a general guideline (as of 2025):
* Annual dues: approximately ¥10,000 – ¥30,000
Q. Do education, income, or assets matter when applying for membership?
A. Not at all. The petition for membership contains no such questions.
Q. May I visit other lodges?
A. Once you become a Master Mason, you may visit lodges worldwide that are in amity with the Grand Lodge of Japan. This includes about 17 lodges in Japan and thousands more abroad.
Q. Can foreign Masons visiting Japan attend meetings?
A. Yes. Any Master Mason from a jurisdiction recognized by the Grand Lodge of Japan may visit. In most cases, simply contact the lodge secretary in advance.
Q. Can women become Masons?
A. Since its founding in 1957, the Grand Lodge of Japan has admitted only men as members.
Q. What languages are used in Japanese lodges?
A. English, Japanese, or both. Rituals are available in both languages, and lodges may adjust according to the needs of candidates and visitors.
Dress and Requirements
* Requirements differ by lodge; confirm with the secretary beforehand.
* A current dues card or proof of good standing is usually sufficient.
* Most lodges provide visitor aprons if needed.
* Lodges in Japan tend to be somewhat more casual in dress compared to those in Europe.

A. メイスンリーは「自由意志と同意」を重視しています。つまり、誰かに勧誘されるのではなく、**自ら希望して入会を申し込む**ことが原則です。 （勧誘は一切禁止されている）

年末や他の申請が多い場合はさらに時間がかかることもあります。
すべてのメンバーが通ってきた道であり近道はありません。

A. ロッジごとに異なりますが、おおよその目安は：

Q. 入会に学歴や年収、資産は関係しますか？
A. 一切関係ありません。入会申請書にそのような記入欄も設けられていません。

日本国内だけでも１７のロッジ、海外では数千のロッジに訪問可能です。

Q. 日本を訪れる外国人メイスンは参加できますか？
A. 日本グランドロッジが承認する管轄のマスターメイスンであれば訪問可能です。
通常は事前にセクレタリーに連絡してください。

* デュースカードやグッド・スタンディング証明があれば通常は十分です。
* 訪問者用のエプロンなどは多くのロッジで用意されています。
